The following is a detailed description of those steps.

READING TEST:

A basic competency test (word association) intended specifically for transit operators. The tests are designed as a pass/fail test and will screen out only those applicants whose ability falls below the minimum level needed to perform the job. It is based on extensive research focusing on the type and importance of materials operators must be able to read on their own. It is a timed test (10 minutes) in a controlled environment.

INCIDENT OBSERVATION & REPORT WRITING TEST:

A Video based testing format that has been specifically designed for transit operators. Applicants will see a video based on brief scenario and then write an incident observation report. At the beginning of the test, applicants see a sample situation and a sample report to guide them in what is considered to be a good response. Reports are rated on content, organization, grammar, punctuation, spelling, legibility and expression. This test is timed at 15 minutes and is taken in a controlled environment.

CUSTOMER RELATIONS & PEOPLE SKILLS:

A video based testing format that has been specifically designed for the selection of transit operators. Typical subject matter would include customer relations, relations with Supervisors and co-workers, and working in a diverse cultural workforce. There are examples given of people interacting in a work environment and then applicants are asked, “If you were the operator, what would you do?” This people sense video will assist in identifying potential candidates who have a good sense for customer relations. There are approximately fifty multiple-choice questions and the test is timed. (85 minutes) This test is administered in a controlled environment.

SIMULATED DRIVING VIDEO TESTING:

A new innovative video animation based test of driving judgement that simulates the multi-tasking environment of operating a transit vehicle. This video will identify candidates who can:

  • Concentrate on the road ahead
  • Keep track of oncoming traffic and situations
  • Monitor vehicle mirrors
  • Listen and respond to radio transmissions, trainer instructions and on-board customers
  • Anticipate problems with turns, intersections and traffic

This particular test has a value placed on it according to the nature of the question. This is a timed test (35 minutes) and is conducted in a controlled environment.

After the testing is completed, a determination will be made to offer an interview with Human Resources, Operations Department Supervisor, and the Safety & Training Officer.
